No Kill Harford was started in late 2011 with the goal of transforming Harford County into a No Kill community. “No Kill” communities across the county are saving 90% or more of the animals that enter their open admission shelters. We believe that Harford County can join these communities and help make our county one of the safest places for companion animals in the world.
Our Programs
- Fix Harford – Sometimes, bad things happen to great pet parents. For far too long, the animal welfare community has spent too much time blaming people who are forced to surrender their pets instead of looking for creative ways to help them. Fix Harford represents a total transformation of the status quo by coming up with creative solutions for helping people who are able to provide companion animals with a loving home if someone is willing to help them. There is nothing that we won’t do to keep a pet in a loving home including: providing food & pet supplies, spay/neuter assistance, veterinary assistance, behavioral assistance, transport, and counseling. Once we help a family, we keep in regular contact to address difficult times before they become an unmanageable problem. Fix Harford offers help to Harford pet owners without prejudice or judgement.
- Harford Community Cats – By some estimates, there are close to 35,000 feral cats living in the farms, neighborhoods, and alley ways of Harford County. While the county’s current trap and remove program addresses a small number of nuisance cats each year, feral cat caretakers are the only other option for stabilizing the population. Harford Community Cats helps feral cat caretakers in Harford County by teaching “best practices” for feral cat colony management and providing assistance with vaccination and spay/neuter clinics. We also collect feral cat census information and help resolve complaints and address concerns about Harford’s community cats.
- Harford Pets Alive! – Sometimes, despite our best efforts to help their owners, animals lose their homes. Many times the reason is related to extreme behavior issues or illness. Pets with issues like these almost always lose their life when surrendered to a shelter. Harford Pets Alive accepts pets into foster that other rescues won’t take and that shelters will almost certainly kill. We rehabilitate and heal and then work on making the adoptee an excellent candidate for adoption.
Advocacy
Whether it’s advocating loudly against Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) in Annapolis or lobbying the Harford government for legislation that protects public health and saves lives through programs like Trap, Neuter, & Return (TNR), No Kill Harford is THE voice for pets in Harford County. We are the only animal welfare organization in Harford actively petitioning county and state legislators in support of humane and life saving laws for animals.
Education
Education is the foundation of saving lives. We teach pet owners and feral caretakers “best practices” for animal care and about alternatives to surrender and abandonment. By reaching out and connecting with pet parents through education and instruction, we are making Harford a better place for pets.
